Methane is powerful albeit short-lived greenhouse gas and its increase in concentration in the atmosphere contributes significantly to global warming. Its short lifetime in the atmosphere and strong global warming potential makes methane emissions reductions a preferred instrument to reach mid-term climate targets for policymakers and regulators. On this panel, we give an overview of the political landscape and outline how global initiatives such as the Methane Pledge and the EU Gas Package, have encouraged regulators across the globe to propose new methane emissions legislations. The panel will discuss the relevant regulatory changes for their organizations, how their operational processes have been impacted, and how this new “regulatory reality” will impact the future of the natural gas industry.
